The Dining Hall is the on-campus facility provided for the service of food to those students on a food plan. It is run by Sloan Food Services. There is also a food court with such establishments as Burger President and White House.

[edit] Location On Campus

The Dining Hall is located in the Student Union Building. It contains several food counters, two salad bars and a dessert island and, of course, a bunch of tables for the students to sit at and eat. In ~5~ Meal Plans, Jamie describes it this way:

The dining room was a big open space with floor-to-ceiling windows all along the external wall, and a set of doors leading out to a patio with more tables and benches. The color scheme was institutional blue-gray. The floor tiles had little flecks of color to make them look vaguely like marble. Low walls topped with planters broke up the seating area and probably helped cut down on the noise.

The breakfast selection on the first Saturday, before the start of classes, was described like this:

The first glass-covered section of the buffet line was full of raw ingredients for omelet filling. The next had tubs of hot selections: bacon, scrambled eggs, hashed browns, pancakes, and sausage patties. There were three other sections, but they were all empty. The dry cereal was in dispensers on a separate counter, and fresh fruit and baked goods were on what looked to be a salad bar.

[edit]

The Dining Hall is where most the main characters go to eat and hang out. It is also one of the places where Puddy wants to keep a visible presence of Harlowe students, due to her belief that the free food that is available at Harlowe Hall for the residents is a bribe by the administration to keep the non-human students separated from the human students without appearing to ill-treat or actively segregate them. This belief is supported by the circumstantial evidence that, although freshman students are required by university rules to have purchased at least a minimal dining plan, Harlowe students are offered the opportunity to cash theirs in, which would result in their having no other option than to take advantage of the free food, thus keeping them out of the Dining Hall. The security guards at the Dining Hall seem a bit overeager to eject Harlowe students from the dining hall, having done so for behaviors ranging from loud voices to tears, further lending credence to the idea that the administration would rather they ate elsewhere.
