Nekoyokai

A species of vaguely catlike humanoids from a place far from the location of Magisterius University. They are a little short on average, with gentle fur covering their exposed skin, claws that retract into their fingers, a feline tail, and catlike ears atop their heads.

The only nekoyokai in the story thus far are Sooni's companions: Suzi, Maliko and Kai. Their native language is Yokano and they appear to be bought and sold in their native land. Whether that is true of all of the nekoyokai, only the ones from the same place as Sooni, or only certain nekoyokai has not yet been revealed.

It was implied in Chapter 37 that one of the nekoyokai was being treated in the healing center for a broken leg during Ian Mason's treatment for his burned hand; he makes reference to a "cat...thing" seen in the waiting area. This was later revealed to be Suzi in the bonus story How Suzi Broke Her Leg. The nekoyokai thus far discussed in the story apparently take physical abuse from their owner as normal, but until additional nekoyokai are introduced it is not known whether physical abuse of nekoyokai by their owners is commonplace.

The relationship between the kitsune folk and the nekoyokai can be summed up as follows. kitsu=upperclass nekoyokai=working class. The dominant culture seems to resemble feudal japan with modern popular culture (anime, manga, catgirls, etc.)
