Mackenzie Blaise

An 18 year old incoming freshman at Magisterius University. She has the dubious honor of being the narrator for the story on which this wiki is based. Mackenzie is half-demon/half-human, and tends to accidentally light things (pillows, herself, other people) on fire. She is 5’4” and considers herself short, slight, and to be less curvy than she ought to be, rendering her unattractive. Many on campus disagree with her assessment. She only passes a saving throw versus social disaster on a natural roll of 20. It has been pointed out that she cares more about others than herself, and tends towards non-confrontational solutions to prospective problems, such as putting up with whoever is giving her a problem. She resides in room 417 of Harlowe Hall with Two (she had initially shared it with Puddy), and is majoring in Applied Enchantments at Magisterius University. Knowing our author's penchant for puns, one wonders if it was entirely accidental that Mack's last name sounds a lot like "Blaze". It's also been pointed out that this was the name of Merlin's master.

[edit] Early Life

Up until Mackenzie was nine, she lived with her mother, who she remembers mostly by more tactile than visual senses. Her fondest memories include going to a Hamadryad forest for a field trip in first grade, which made a lasting impression on her, and dressing up for the Feast of Veil, a kind of Halloween like celebration.

When she was nine, something very unpleasant happened; she's repeatedly refused to talk about it, except to say it wasn't her fault. About this same time, she started requiring virgin blood for sustenance.

After that, Mackenzie was raised by her grandmother, who instilled firm virtues, a prudish attitude towards sex and sexuality, and strongly discouraged Mackenzie from hurting anyone in any way for any reason. There is also the very strong implication that Mackenzie's grandmother left her with the impression that she was a horrible monster, a terrible demon, and possibly even responsible for what happened to her mother. Mackenzie is terribly afraid of having any more accidents.

Mackenzie didn’t like her primary or secondary schooling. She never felt popular or accepted, which she attributes to widespread knowledge of her heritage. She did learn a few tricks there, and seemed to have found interests that would keep her attention, namely her major and magic in general. Because of the lack of acceptance, Mackenzie resolved to try to keep such knowledge of herself out of the public perception. She has largely failed in that regard.

[edit] Dormitory Life

The first change in her life as loner from high school was moving in to her dorm room with her roommate. That began a long complicated spiral that is always better explained by reading the story, which begins then. She began to trust her roommate Puddy and Amaranth, a nymph living in her dorm. Mackenzie tries to protect Two, an emancipated golem who lives on the same floor, from being exploited by others. She also regrets any bad impression that may have been made on Twyla, and the bad impression she made on Feejee.

She does manage to maintain rancorous hostility with Sooni and her pack of nekoyokai, ostensibly about the election of the floor representative. Their interactions have undertones of both protagonist-antagonist interactions and the hashing out of social status.

Other acquaintances of hers are Celia, Belinda, Ian, Feejee, and Steff.

Puddy has since moved out of their shared room, and Mackenzie has lived with Two (as indicated above) as of 116: Nocturnal Immersions.

Mackenzie has begun compiling lists of actions she is comfortable and uncomfortable with trying for Amaranth, who requested it at Steff's suggestion. She has also begun to date Ian Mason, and expressed an interest in dating Steff. Viktor indicated that, if he authorized it - something which would be communicated only to Amaranth - she could only date Steff by agreeing to be responsible for Steff's good behavior (Steff being on restriction). She would indicate her acceptance of that term by actually dating Steff. Mackenzie also likes to be spanked.

She was also taking the Basic Knife weapon proficiency class (at 12:45 P) until she transferred to Mixed Melee with Steff in 71: Implied Excursions. She was also taking Elven History (at 2:00 P), taught by Ariadne Einhorn until 112: Changing Histories, when she changed to Early Republican History.

Her Tuesday, Thursday schedule includes Elemental Invocation mornings, and Basic Enchantments and Mixed Melee (in that order) in the afternoon. She is considered studious for taking two labs in the same semester, let alone the same day.

To comply with the university's weapons policy, Mackenzie used a glorified hunting knife, until her adventure in the school's famed maze allowed her to talk directly to the Chancellor, Beth Davies, who agreed to let Mackenzie classify herself as a fierce creature so she would not have to carry one.
