This chapter covers a short span of the evening of Astera 11th, 222. It is Friday before school starts, "Week 0" of the story.

[edit] Plot Synopsis

The 'animal brigrade', as Mackenzie calls them, move to the back of the room, and two more girls enter, a mermaid and a kobold. And then the RA, Kiersta, enters. She opens the meeting, and instructs everyone to introduce herself, giving name, species, major, and some fun fact about her.

  • Trina; father is Cyclops; music, subtle arts minor; "an interesting thing about me is that I can read a book and watch TV at the same time.”

  • Celia; Nagakin; illusion; has a paralytic poison that could arrest breathing and sleeps with her eyes open
  • Belinda; Ogress; martial combat; on skirmish scholarship
  • unpronouncable name; species likewise unpronouncable; subtle arts; also on skirmish team
  • Barley; cereal nymph; undeclared; not actually gay, but supports the Prism Pride Coalition.
  • Twyla; unknown parentage; divination (hoping to find out her parentage), minor in music; plays harpsichord.
  • Sara and Tara Leighton; technically human; undecided; want to study different things, but must attend same classes
  • Delia Daella d'Wyr daughter of Daella Degra d’Wyr, etc.; dark Elf; martial combat and divine magic, minor in subtle arts; “Those who style themselves as my friends call me Dee.”
  • Two; Golem; domestic arts; "There is nothing interesting about me.”
  • Amaranth; cereal nymph; life magic; not Khersian, but believes they do some good works, wears Egg of Khersis in part for the pain.
  • Sooni; Kitsuyokai; applied enchantments, minors in transportation and communication; "These are my Nekoyokai friends, Suzi, Maliko, and Kai.”
  • Raquel; human; martial combat; "You know how oil of stoneskin has a warning label that says it’s not a contraceptive? My parents are the reason.”

Introductions finished, Kiersta mentions that this is the first time in three years that she's been an RA and never had any Delving and Discovery majors. Shiel responds that not everyone finds breaking into people's homes and taking their stuff to be as entertaining as humans do.

Then Kiersta goes over the rules, and Puddy mentions that she has a racial exemption for alcohol, and she and the two cereal nymphs have racial exemptions for visitation rules. A floor senator will be elected in two weeks, and there will be doughnuts and pastries in the basement lounge in the morning, where the dean of non-human students will give a welcome speach.

The meeting breaks up, and Mackenzie announces an intent to go to bed. Puddy will be spending the night with Mariel, since her roommate, Barley, will be busy on the boy's side. Mackenzie expresses surprise that the two nymphs are not rooming together, leading to a minor confrontation with Celia over racial issues. She finally leaves, bumping into Sooni berating Kai in their native language. Kai flees the room she shares with Sooni, joining Maliko and Suzi in theirs.

Mackenzie locks herself in her room, glad that the day is over, musing that doughnuts tomorrow will be good, and that, no matter how bad today was, tomorrow could be better.

  • The three nekoyokai do not introduce themselves, but permit Sooni to do so for them. When asked about majors, Maliko says they don't know yet.
  • Tensions between human and non-human races are foreshadowed.
  • Mackenzie's unusual food requirements are foreshadowed.
