This chapter covers a short span of the morning of Astera 27th, 222. It is the Sunday ending "Week 2" of the story.

It was published on January 31, 2008.

[edit] Plot Synopsis

Viktor leaves Mackenzie sitting in the chair by Steff's desk while he goes out into the hall to retrieve Steff. From the length of time it takes Viktor to come back with Steff and the conversation which follows upon their return it appears he had to go down to the third floor to find her, indicating that Steff violated Viktor's earlier prohibition declaring the entire third floor off limits. Steff protests the punishment Viktor threatens on the grounds that it had been stated as the punishment for going back to see Finbar, which Steff declares she wasn't but only looking for Ronnie, and no specific punishment had been declared for violating the prohibition on the third floor. In frustration, Viktor dumps Mack out of the chair, steps on her stomach, and tells Steff to sit. He clarifies his previous instructions, stating that if Steff violates any of the instructions he gave her that day he would take her skull away.

Viktor steps off of Mack, picks her up and puts her in a box in the closet after yanking out the box's previous occupant. Mackenzie spends over half an hour in the box, figuring out the rules of the box and becoming quite calm and contented from being in there. While there she compares it to the time she used to spend locked in her grandmother's basement growing up.

When Viktor is through punishing Steff he retrieves Mack from the box and tells Steff to take her back. As they leave the girl from the closet slips back into the room again. Steff tells Mack that Viktor took away her skull to keep for a while. Steff completely collapses in Mack's arms out of fear of losing Viktor, claiming that she just can't do what Viktor wants of her. Mack asks if Steff has considered mental healing sessions. Steff reacts somewhat negatively at first then reconsiders, asking Mack if she thinks it's really a good idea. When Mack confirms that she does, Steff quietly agrees to try it.

[edit] Notes

  • This is the first appearance of Gwynedd, the girl in the box before Mackenzie, a classmate of Viktor's. She is not named, however, until Chapter 150: Food For Thought.
  • Mack realizes that Viktor was showing her a kind of consideration by putting her away in the box while he punished Steff.
  • Before Gwynedd slips back into the room Mack notices that she has the word "Viktor" carved into her arm in big angry letters.

[edit] Quotes

  • Before, I never would have conceived of an enchanted box for storing sex partners in. Now, I was wondering what the state of the art was for such things, and whether I could improve on it.
