Ian walks Mack and Two back to Harlowe. Mack asks Two to give them privacy to talk, so Two walks ahead rather than being left behind. Mack and Ian talk about their relationship, then about Ian's problems in Elemental Invocation. Ian gets mad because Mack's suggestions for getting the hang of it run counter to everything he believes. Mack realizes that Ian's father has a temper. He smacks her when she starts to say he's afraid of his father. Two confronts Ian with her mace for striking Mack. Ian realizes Mack needs more blood. Two says she is not suitable, though whether this is because she is a golem or whether she means that she is not a virgin is unclear. Ian goes to find Amaranth, while Two takes Mack back to Harlowe.
