Mack arrives at MU. She gets lost in another residence's lobby and a helpful student gives her directions. His reaction is the first indication that Harlowe Hall has a strange reputation. Mack checks in with the Resident Advisor, Gwendolyn Rodrigues, and receives her room key.

This chapter covers a short span of the afternoon of Astera 11th, 222. It is Friday before school starts, "Week 0" of the story.

[edit] Plot Synopsis

The narrator, looking for Harlowe Hall, ends up intead in a hallway connecting three residence halls. After castigating herself for a simple mistake, she has to ask for directions. Another student points her in the right direction, but has a bad reaction to the mention of Harlowe. The narrator goes to sign in and we learn that her name is Mackenzie Blaise. Other students chat with each other about their course loads and the dorm regulations.

The senior resident advisor, Gwendolyn Rodrigues, reminds Mackenzie of the school's weapon policy and asks to see the weapon that she's using. Mackenzie produces a hunting knife with a bronze handle, which Gwendolyn notes is "barely enchanted." After Mackenzie asserts that it's still enough to satisfy the policy, Mackenzie is given her welcome materials and officially welcomed to Magisterius University.

This chapter hides the nature of the setting until Mackenzie is asked to produce her weapon.
Mackenzie's insecurity is foreshadowed when she criticizes herself through her internal dialogue.
Campus rules mentioned in this chapter include the weapons policy and a prohibition on candles in rooms. A warning to avoid going out of doors after dark and stick to the lighted paths is also given.
The town of Enwich is mentioned, though not named.
